A complaint of medical negligence has been filed against a doctor at the Mother and Child Department of the Kalaburagi district hospital following the death of a 23-year-old new mother, Bhagyashri Shivaji.
According to her husband, Shivaji, Bhagyashri delivered a baby boy at the Afzalpur government hospital on Tuesday. He alleged that the doctor was absent during the delivery, leaving it to be handled by a nurse. Following complications, including a drop in her blood pressure, the nurse instructed that Bhagyashri be transferred to the district hospital. Shivaji claimed that the doctors there also failed to provide adequate care, leading to her death.
District Surgeon Dr. Rukhia Asana Rabba refuted the claims, stating that the patient suffered from excessive bleeding and a sudden drop in blood pressure due to shock, and there was no negligence involved. District Health Officer Dr. Sharanabasappa Kyatanal has directed the taluk medical officer to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident.
This tragic case highlights concerns over the quality of maternal healthcare in rural areas. The incident follows similar concerns raised in Ballari, where maternal deaths prompted a government panel to investigate medical supply procurement.
The probe will aim to establish accountability and ensure better medical care in the region to prevent such incidents in the future.
