Tension flared in Kalaburagi after NEET aspirant Shripad Patil was allegedly compelled to remove his janivara (sacred thread) before entering the exam hall at St. Mary’s PU College on Sunday.

Following Shripad’s complaint that his religious sentiments were offended, the Station Bazaar police registered a case against two individuals, Sharanagouda and Ganesh, under Section 298 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which deals with deliberate intent to wound religious feelings. Both accused, who were working for a private security agency, have been arrested, confirmed Police Commissioner Dr. Sharanappa.

The incident sparked a protest led by Brahmin community members and Akhila Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) activists. The situation escalated when protesters attempted to storm the exam centre but were held back by police.

After completing the test, Shripad, a student from Betabalakunda village in Bidar district and currently studying in Kalaburagi, re-wore a new janivara in a public ceremony accompanied by Vedic chants.

The matter has ignited a broader debate about balancing religious freedoms with exam security protocols. Authorities have assured a thorough investigation and appropriate action.
