Students of the Dr B.R. Ambedkar Post-Matric Hostel at SPS Nagar on Budal Road have lodged a formal complaint with the district administration after allegedly finding a worm in the idli-sambar served to them.

The students approached the Additional Deputy Commissioner with a plate of the food to demonstrate the seriousness of the issue and demanded immediate action.

Allegations of repeated unhygienic food

According to the students, the incident is not isolated. They alleged that unhygienic items such as hair, small stones, sticks and insects are frequently found in the food served at the hostel.

The students further claimed that despite repeated complaints, neither the kitchen staff nor the hostel warden has taken corrective measures. They said the poor quality of food has raised serious concerns about their health and safety.

“This is not the first time. We keep finding unwanted objects in our food, but no one listens,” a student alleged.

Complaint submitted with food sample

To strengthen their complaint, the students carried the food plate containing the alleged worm directly to the Additional Deputy Commissioner’s office, urging authorities to conduct an inspection of the hostel kitchen and food supply system.

The hostel primarily houses students from economically weaker and marginalised backgrounds who depend entirely on the institution for daily meals.

Administration assures inspection

Responding to the complaint, Sheelvant Shivakumar assured the students that the matter would be taken seriously.

He said he would personally visit the hostel to inspect the kitchen facilities and verify whether food is being prepared and served as per the approved menu and hygiene standards.

“If lapses are found, strict action will be taken against those responsible,” the ADC said.

Demand for accountability

Students have demanded regular monitoring of food quality and accountability of hostel staff to prevent such incidents in the future. They also urged the authorities to ensure safe, hygienic and nutritious meals as per government norms.
