In a recent Parliament session during discussions on The Protection of Interests in Aircraft Objects Bill, 2025, Kalaburagi MP Radhakrishna Doddamani urged the Union Civil Aviation Minister to introduce daily air connectivity between Kalaburagi, Bengaluru, and New Delhi. He emphasized that such links are crucial for the economic progress of the Kalyana Karnataka region.
Doddamani advocated consistent air services on two proposed routes: a morning Bengaluru-Kalaburagi-Delhi flight and an evening return from Delhi-Kalaburagi-Bengaluru. He pointed out that despite repeated appeals, many pending infrastructure upgrades at Kalaburagi Airport remain unattended.
The airport, home to Karnataka’s second-longest runway after Bengaluru, holds potential for expanded operations but suffers from a lack of necessary facilities. Although the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) approved night and all-weather flight operations in May 2023, effective execution is hindered by insufficient infrastructure.
The demand for additional amenities such as Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) units, more aircraft parking bays, and IndiGo service expansion remains high. Presently, only two parking slots are available, and post a night-landing simulation review, two more parking areas have been recommended.
Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge, has consistently pushed for these upgrades, yet actionable outcomes are awaited. Under Article 371-J, Kalaburagi has a special constitutional status, making its development all the more significant.
Enhanced flight connectivity will bridge long-standing gaps and foster equitable regional development.
