Bengaluru: Purushotham Bilimale, Chairman of the Kannada Development Authority (KDA), has raised alarms over the declining number of Kannadigas in administrative positions in banks, warning that this trend could lead to significant social conflicts in the future. During a meeting with officials from the State Level Bankers’ Committee (SLBC) on Tuesday, Bilimale stressed the need for appointing individuals fluent in Kannada for roles that involve public interaction.

He highlighted that failure to prioritize the use of Kannada in banking administration could lead to rising tensions across the state. To address this, SLBC is planning a meeting with representatives from all banks in the state to discuss and implement guidelines aimed at making banking services more citizen-friendly by enhancing Kannada usage.

Bilimale also advocated for increasing opportunities for Kannadigas in outsourced banking roles and suggested incorporating this requirement into tender regulations. Additionally, he instructed the SLBC to submit a proposal to the Central government for more local recruitment in banks.

In a move to ensure language proficiency, Bilimale emphasized that newly recruited bank staff should undergo Kannada language training at bank training centers to better serve the local population.
