Mumbai: Celebrated cardiologist Dr BM Hegde was confered the ‘Sir George Fernandes Memorial Award’ by Jayakrishna Parisara Premi Samithi on June 3 in Kurla East, Mumbai. June 3 is the birthday of former minister George Fernandes.
Accepting the award, Dr Hegde said that he remembers the nature and political stature of George Fernandes and said that despite facing immense hardships when he landed in Maharashtra, Fernandes moulded himself into being one of the finest statesmen of the country. “He lived as a non-corrupt politician. I must appreciate the Jayakrishna Parisara Premi Samiti for honouring George Fernandes this way. The prefix ‘Sir’ is indeed a great honour to George Fernandes,” he said.
Opposition leader, Govt of Karnataka, Kota Srinivas Poojary, talking about the personality of Dr BM Hegde said that Dr Hegde does not confine himself to his field of expertise, instead he is sensitive about each and every problem persisting in the society and he makes a sincere attempt to address those issues.
“There is a great significance when a personality like Dr Hegde accepts an award instituted in the name of a statesman like George Fernandes,” he said adding that there is a need to take up some steps to make sure that the contributions of George Fernandes to the nation remains in the pages of history forever.
Minister of state, Finance and Planning, Government of Maharashtra Deepak Kesarkar said that he is well aware of the contributions made by Padmabhushan Dr BM Hegde and Padmabhushan Dr Veerendra Heggade for the welfare of the society. “Dr BM Hegde does not belong to Karnataka alone. He belongs to the entire nation,” Kesarkar said.
The programme was presided over by Samiti President Tonse Jayakrishna Shetty. Advocate Prakash L Shetty among others were present.
