Sonu Nigam Served Notice Over Alleged Anti-Kannadiga Remarks

Playback singer Sonu Nigam has been formally served a notice by the Bengaluru District Police, asking him to appear before the investigating officer within seven days in relation to an FIR filed against him for allegedly making derogatory comments about the Kannadiga community.

The FIR, registered on May 3 at Avalahalli Police Station in Bengaluru Rural District, stems from a complaint lodged by Dharmaraj A, the president of the Karnataka Rakshana Vedike’s Bengaluru City District Unit. The pro-Kannada organisation accused Nigam of making “offensive and inflammatory” remarks during a public music concert in Bengaluru. These comments, allegedly captured on video and now widely circulated, are said to have hurt the sentiments of the local community and sparked concerns of linguistic disharmony.

The singer has been booked under Sections 351(2), 352(1), and 353 of the Indian Penal Code. In response, Karnataka Rakshana Vedike staged a protest at Freedom Park in the city, calling for strict legal action against the singer and urging a potential ban from the Kannada entertainment industry.

Nigam, meanwhile, issued a statement addressing the backlash, expressing regret if his words were misinterpreted. He clarified that his sole intention was to entertain the audience and that he had no motive to offend or disrespect any community.

As the investigation proceeds, the matter continues to stir debate in Karnataka’s socio-cultural and entertainment circles.
