Karnataka HC Judge Expresses Regret Over Controversial Remarks
Karnataka High Court judge Justice V. Srishananda has expressed regret over remarks he made during a judicial proceeding, which were reportedly taken out of context on social media. The comments, made while presiding over a landlord-tenant dispute case, became controversial when a viral video showed him referring to a Muslim-dominated area in Bengaluru as “Pakistan.”
During Saturday’s court session, Justice Srishananda clarified that his remarks were unintentional and not meant to offend any individual or community. He apologized to those who may have been hurt, saying, “If such observations hurt any individual or any section of society or community, I express my sincere regrets.”
The issue gained national attention after the Supreme Court took suo motu cognizance of the comments. A five-judge bench acknowledged the widespread presence of social media in monitoring court proceedings and suggested that guidelines for judicial comments might be necessary. The court called for a report from the High Court’s Register General on the matter.
The incident underscores the growing influence of social media on judicial transparency and raises concerns about the impact of offhand remarks during court hearings.
