Bengaluru: Electricity bills in Karnataka are set to rise again, as the Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission (KERC) has approved a tariff hike proposal submitted by the Electricity Supply Companies (ESCOMs). The revised rates will be effective from April 1, adding further financial strain on consumers already dealing with increased bus and metro fares.
Despite public consultations held across regions under BESCOM, MESCOM, JESCOM, and other power distribution companies, the commission has decided to proceed with the hike. Power companies had demanded an increase of ₹1 to ₹1.5 per unit, citing rising operational expenses and financial challenges. ESCOMs also sought a one-time tariff adjustment for three years to stabilize electricity pricing.
After evaluating the proposal, KERC officials found the increase justified but delayed the announcement until the Assembly session ended. Last year, electricity tariffs were reduced, but this time, a substantial hike is anticipated.
With the new rates set to take effect from April 1, households and businesses across Karnataka must brace for higher energy costs, further impacting the cost of living.
