Old Goa Police have registered an Unnatural Death case after an 18-year-old waiter was found hanging in the bathroom of his accommodation near Sambhar Restaurant at Kadamba Plateau late on Saturday night. The incident has shocked the local hospitality community and efforts are currently underway to contact the young man’s family in Odisha

According to police sources, the control room received a call at around 11:23 pm from Shaun Araujo, owner of Sambhar Restaurant. Araujo reported that his staff member, Jaya Malik, son of Sania Malik and a native of Gajapati district in Odisha, had allegedly died inside the flat adjoining the restaurant where he resided.
Police personnel immediately reached the location and secured the area.
Police procedures and preliminary findings
A scene of occurrence panchanama was conducted in the presence of two respectable panch witnesses. Officials noted that Malik was found hanging in the bathroom of the staff accommodation. After completing the procedural formalities, the body was shifted to the GMC Morgue in Bambolim for preservation and further examination.
Police said no external injuries were reported at the initial stage, but a detailed post-mortem examination will help determine the cause and manner of death.
Family being contacted; inquiry continues
Old Goa Police have initiated efforts to contact Malik’s family in Odisha to inform them of the incident and to complete required documentation. Authorities said the young waiter had been working at Sambhar Restaurant for some time and stayed in a flat provided by the establishment.
Further inquiry is being conducted by LPSI Laureen Sequeira, who will record additional statements and verify circumstances leading up to the discovery of the body.
Police have not ruled out any possibility at this stage, stating that the investigation will proceed in accordance with procedural norms, including verification of workplace conditions, personal background and potential stressors.
