The All India Central Council of Trade Unions (AICCTU) has raised concerns over the welfare of pourakarmikas (sanitation workers) amidst the scorching heat wave in Karnataka. In a letter addressed to various government bodies, including the Urban Development Department and the Department of Municipal Administration, the AICCTU highlighted the challenges faced by these workers, particularly those from marginalized communities, as they continue to toil under harsh conditions.
The letter emphasized that pourakarmikas often work long hours without breaks, enduring extreme temperatures without adequate facilities for rest and hydration. It pointed out the lack of resting areas and insufficient drinking water facilities, which pose serious health risks to the workers.
In response to these concerns, the AICCTU has called for immediate action to safeguard the health and safety of pourakarmikas. Specifically, they have urged the implementation of half-day shifts with weekly offs, without any financial deductions. Additionally, they have requested additional breaks during working hours and provisions for daily supplies of drinking water, ORS, buttermilk, and protective gear such as eye shades, hats, and umbrellas to shield workers from the sun.
The urgency of these demands is underscored by the soaring daytime temperatures in Bengaluru, which have exceeded historical averages by several degrees. With temperatures reaching as high as 38 degrees Celsius, the city is experiencing warmer nights as well, exacerbating the challenges faced by pourakarmikas working in these conditions. It is imperative for authorities to take swift action to ensure the well-being of these essential workers amidst the ongoing heat wave.
