Karnataka’s forests are set to welcome trekkers once again with the launch of Aranya Vihaara, an online portal developed to facilitate trekking in the region while ensuring safety and environmental sustainability. Following a surge in trekking activities at Kumara Parvatha peak in January 2024, the forest department had initially imposed a ban on trekking in state forests. However, with the introduction of this new system, the ban has been lifted, and trekking will now be allowed only through prior bookings made via the portal.
The Aranya Vihaara initiative, developed at a cost of ₹40 lakhs, is a collaboration between the forest department and the Karnataka E-Governance Department. The portal will feature all trekking routes recognized by the Ecotourism Board. To enforce compliance, the forest department has established checking squads to conduct random inspections of trekkers to prevent illegal entries without bookings.
Current and Upcoming Trekking Trails
The portal will initially offer five trekking trails, with plans to expand to 18 trails by the end of October 2024. The currently available trails include:
- Talakaveri-Nishani Motte
- Beedahalli-Kumaraparvata-Beedahalli
- Beedahalli-Kumaraparvata-Subramanya (Kodagu district)
- Skandagiri (Chikkaballapur district)
- Nagamalai (Chamarajanagar district)
How the Online Portal Works
To maintain ecological balance, the forest department has established a carrying capacity for the trekking routes, limiting the daily number of trekkers to approximately 300. A guide will accompany every group of ten trekkers, and individuals can book for up to ten trekkers at a time.
Registration Process:
- Email Registration: Trekkers must register using their email ID on the website.
- ID Verification: Valid government identification (e.g., driver’s license, PAN, passport) is required.
- OTP Authentication: Upon entering ID details, trekkers will receive an OTP for verification before proceeding with the booking.
- Payment Security: The website ensures secure payment options, with pricing varying based on the trek’s length and duration.
Cancellation Policy:
- 100% Refund: If cancelled seven days before the trek.
- 50% Refund: If cancelled between seven and two days prior.
- No Refund: For cancellations made within the last two days.
With the introduction of Aranya Vihaara, Karnataka aims to promote responsible trekking practices while protecting its natural resources, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for all trekkers.
