In a remarkable case, a baby boy named Bharti, born in Rabkavi Banhatti town, Bagalkot, Karnataka, has captured attention due to his unique condition of having 25 fingers. The infant, delivered at Sunshine Hospital, was found to have 12 toes and 13 fingers—6 on each hand and 7 on the left.
Dr. Parvati Hiremath, an obstetrician and gynecologist at Sunshine Hospital, explained that the condition stems from a chromosomal imbalance. Despite the rarity of this case, both the baby and his family are reported to be in good health.
Bharti’s father, Gurappa, shared in an interview that his wife had been fervently praying at the Sri Bhuvaneshwari Devi Shakti Peetam Suragiri Hills temple in Kundaragi for a child. Gurappa expressed his gratitude, believing that the goddess’s blessings brought this child into their lives.
This condition, known as polydactyly, results in the presence of extra fingers or toes and often occurs without a genetic cause. Such rare cases have been seen before; for instance, in 2023, a baby girl in Rajasthan was born with a total of 26 fingers and toes.
The family is overjoyed, viewing the newborn as a divine blessing. Dr. Hiremath assured that the baby boy’s health is being closely monitored, and he is expected to thrive despite the unusual number of digits.
