Bagalkot district, celebrated for its horticulture prowess, has reached new heights in exports, gaining recognition among domestic and international buyers. Grapes, red chillies, turmeric, onions, bananas, and other crops have significantly contributed to the district’s economic growth, generating ₹366 crore in revenue from 34,100 metric tonnes of exported produce.

Ravindra Hakati, Deputy Director of Horticulture, highlighted that the export ratio witnessed a considerable rise in 2023-24. Notably, red chillies grown in Hunagund taluk have entered markets in the US and Europe, with 2,200 MT exported to these regions and across India.

Key export highlights include:

  • Bananas: 1,500 MT sent to Delhi, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and other states.
  • Onions: 1,200 MT exported to Malaysia, Colombo, Maldives, and Indian states.
  • Turmeric: 3,000 MT shipped to Europe, Korea, Kerala, and Maharashtra.
  • Grapes: 1,200 MT delivered to Maharashtra, Telangana, and Goa.
  • Dry Grapes: 5,000 MT sent to Maharashtra, Telangana, and Goa.
  • Pomegranates: 20,000 MT supplied to Delhi, Punjab, Goa, and southern states.

A buyers-sellers meet in February 2024 facilitated direct interactions, helping farmers avoid fraud by identifying genuine buyers. Hakati credited the success to farmers’ adherence to quality standards and expert guidance.

Mudhol and Jamkhandi lead in grape cultivation, while Kaladagi is a prominent pomegranate grower. Plans to establish cold storage facilities in Bagalkot are underway, with the horticulture department providing technical support through drip systems, polyhouses, and subsidies.
