A tragic stray dog attack in Karnataka’s Bagalkot district has claimed the life of a 10-year-old girl, sparking grief, anger and renewed questions over civic accountability and animal control measures.

Child succumbs despite advanced treatment

The victim, Alaina Lokapur, was critically injured after being attacked by a stray dog in Sector No. 15 of Navanagar, Bagalkot, last week. She was initially admitted to the district hospital before being shifted to Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS), Hubballi, for advanced treatment.

Despite sustained medical efforts, the child succumbed to her injuries on Wednesday. Doctors said she had suffered severe facial wounds, particularly to her mouth and eyes, which left her unresponsive to treatment even after intensive care.

Civic authorities express regret

Bagalkot City Municipal Corporation Commissioner R Vasanna expressed deep sorrow over the incident and announced a compensation of ₹5 lakh to the bereaved family. He stated that all possible medical support had been provided but the child could not be saved.

Assuring preventive action, the commissioner said steps would be intensified to ensure such incidents do not recur, acknowledging that no parent should lose a child due to civic negligence.

‘A black mark on the corporation’

Chief of the elected council Savita Lenkennavar termed the incident a “black mark” on the Bagalkot Town Municipal Corporation. She said the tragedy occurred despite Supreme Court directions and ongoing drives to control the stray dog population.

Officials said nearly 1,000 stray dogs have been sterilised and relocated to rehabilitation centres across the district as per court orders, with measures further intensified after this incident.

Rising concern across Karnataka

The child’s death has reignited public concern over stray dog attacks in urban areas and the effectiveness of existing control measures. Residents have demanded stricter enforcement, faster response, and sustained monitoring to prevent further loss of life.
