The education department in Ballari is preparing to issue show-cause notices to teachers in 60 government high schools where SSLC pass percentages fell below 40%. The performance of head teachers is under review, and transfers are being considered at schools that recorded extremely low results — as poor as 16%, 20%, and 25%.

Despite efforts to improve outcomes through initiatives like ‘Kalika Aasare’, bund pairing, and phone-in programmes, Ballari ranked 29th in the state, a cause for concern. Subject-wise analysis reveals students fared worst in mathematics (68.8% pass) and science (66.3%), while language and social science results were significantly better.

Teachers have cited staff shortages as a key reason for the poor performance. Of 1,014 sanctioned posts across 125 government high schools, only 619 are filled, leaving a gap of 395 vacancies. Though guest teachers have been appointed to cover 434 of these positions, the shortage of qualified mathematics and science teachers remains a critical issue.

Region-wise vacancy data shows:

  • Siruguppa: 157 vacancies out of 269 posts

  • Ballari West: 88 vacancies from 276 posts

  • Ballari East: 58 vacancies from 288 posts

  • Sandur: 92 vacancies from 181 posts

  • DDPI Umadevi B confirmed that the department is creating a detailed action plan, including holiday special classes and targeted interventions to address learning gaps. Teachers have been instructed to begin preparations, and accountability measures will be enforced.
