Tragedy struck Ballari Institute of Medical Sciences (BIMS) once again, as a young mother lost her life after childbirth, marking the sixth such fatality at the hospital. The latest victim, 21-year-old Mahadevi from Kolur village, succumbed just days after delivering a baby girl via caesarean section on January 25.

This incident adds to the growing maternal mortality crisis in Ballari, with 24 such deaths reported in the district over the past eight months. The hospital had previously faced scrutiny after multiple maternal deaths were linked to a suspected substandard Ringer’s lactate solution last year.

Mahadevi’s grieving family has alleged medical negligence, claiming that doctors failed to provide adequate treatment when she developed a high fever three days before her passing. Her husband, Nandish, insisted that an infection was the cause and accused the hospital of not taking timely action.

BIMS Director Dr. Gangadharagouda, however, attributed her death to thromboembolism—a fatal blood clot blocking circulation. He assured that a thorough investigation would be conducted and stringent action taken if medical negligence was found.

The alarming number of maternal deaths has sparked widespread concern, with families demanding accountability and better healthcare protocols. Authorities are under pressure to ensure stricter medical oversight and prevent further tragedies.
