As helmet rule violations continue unabated in Ballari, leading to alarming road fatality numbers, the police have launched a stricter enforcement drive. Ballari SP Dr. Shobharani V J said many riders falsely believe they are exempt from wearing helmets due to the region’s scorching climate. Some even prefer to pay fines rather than comply with safety regulations.
To address this, the police are implementing a focused enforcement strategy. Selected traffic junctions now serve as mandatory stop points, where two-wheeler riders are both penalised and educated on helmet safety. “If we start fining people across the district simultaneously, they might try to flee, risking their lives. Hence, we’re using a phased approach,” the SP explained.
The data is stark: 103 road deaths were recorded in Ballari till April 2025—most involving helmetless two-wheeler riders. This is nearly half the total of 227 fatalities reported in 2024. Despite over 13,000 fines issued in 2022 and thousands more in subsequent years, helmet usage remains worryingly low.
In a bid to boost awareness, 100 helmets donated by local groups were distributed to the public. Government officers will also be instructed to wear helmets, and even police personnel will face penalties for non-compliance. Colleges are being roped into the campaign, with principals receiving official notices to ensure student adherence.
