Bellary: The(, Forests and Climate Change has written to the Karnataka State Government, urging immediate action to safeguard the pristine virgin forests of Sandur taluk. The ministry’s intervention follows a plea from Dr. Sadananda Heggadal Mutt of Kottur taluk, who submitted a request to the President on 7 July for the protection of the entire virgin forest area, including Deodari, Haddinapade, and Kamatur ranges.
In response to the President’s Office directives, the Union Ministry of Forests has instructed the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests of Karnataka to review Dr. Sadananda’s letter and take appropriate action in accordance with existing regulations. The ministry has emphasised the importance of informing both the ministry and the applicant about the steps taken to protect the virgin forest.
Meanwhile, the Kudremukh Iron Ore Company (KIOCL) has temporarily halted mining operations in the Deodari range of Sandur. However, the company’s exploration activities continue in the Haddinapade forest range. The Union Ministry’s letter serves as a timely reminder of the need to balance economic development with environmental conservation.
