Assault on skull cap-wearing student in Bgk: Probe ordered

Bagalakote: Following a direction from a Judicial Magistrate, an investigation has been launched against seven people including a Police Sub-inspector and Principal of a Government Degree College for allegedly trashing a student for wearing a skull cap in college premises.

A 19-year-old student named Naveed Hasanasab Tharathari, first year arts student of Government First Grade Degree College of Terdal has approached the Banahatti JMFC Court to register FIR against seven persons for allegedly trashing him for wearing a skull cap in the college premises. The incident reportedly took place on February 18, 2022. He suffered minor injuries to his back and neck in the incident.

In his petition filed on March 29, he has appealed the court to file FIR against following seven persons PSI Raju Bilagi, Police Constables P. H. Gani, Mallikarjuna Kenchenavar, S. B. Kalate, S. C. Madanmatti and K. H. Sannatti and College Principal A. S. Pujar.

In the petition, he had reportedly said that, “He had gone wearing a skull cap to the college. The principal not only prevented from entering college but also trashed him. There is no government order refraining students from wearing skull caps inside the college premises,” he added, “The policemen have beaten him up and insulted him over his religion.”

After hearing, the court has not only ordered to register FIR against seven people but also directed Deputy Superintendent of Police to investigate the case.

On the orders of the court the police filed an FIR against the PSI and five other police personnel and principal on May 24.

SP Lokesh Jagalasar, said that, “We have also filed chargesheet against him on the same day of the incident. We have approached him thrice to provide a statement on this case but he refused claiming that he is under medical care at a hospital.”

“As court ordered for the investigation, DySP has started enquiry with regard to this case. The police personnel will cooperate with the investigation.”

Meanwhile, the next hearing of this case will commence on June 30.

According to sources, “The members of PFI and SDPI are behind filing this petition.”
