Bagalakote: As many as 34 students from undergraduate, postgraduate and PhD categories won 77 gold medals at the 11th Convocation of the University of Horticultural Sciences here on Wednesday May 25. Ummesara, daughter of Asmat Ali, farmer and Rahima Banu, homemaker from Sattihalli Village in Gullampet in Chikkamagaluru District has made a great achievement and won won 16 gold medals at the convocation.
Hailing from an agriculture-based family, Ummesara came to the horticulture sector inspired by her father’s farming. She studied hard with a government scholarship. Her father, Asmat Ali grows coffee on four acres of land. He has taken a loan of Rs. 1 lakh from the bank for his daughter’s education. Ummesara’s mother is a homemaker. She is now pursuing a Master’s Degree in Sustainable Agriculture from the University of Padula in Italy and has cleared the entrance exam. A Master’s Degree will cost anywhere between Rs. 15 lakh and Rs. 20 lakh abroad. Ummesara and her parents are expecting helping hand for loans through banks, government scholorships, and donors.
On the occasion of the convocation, Ummesara’s parents were overwhelmed after witnessing their daughter’s achievements.
Speaking to NewsKarnataka Ummesara said, “My parents, teachers, and classmates are the reasons for my achievement. I graduated through a scholarship. Coming from an ordinary agricultural family, I have the desire to serve the country after completing my Master’s Degree abroad. For the same, I need Rs. 15-20 lakh. However the bank is not giving me loans. It is my humble request to the Government to offer help to me.”
