Auto rickshaw fare irregularities continue to plague Belagavi city, as the district administration has failed to implement mandatory auto meters despite promises and past efforts. The issue has sparked widespread public outrage, as drivers continue to charge inflated fares ranging from Rs 100 to Rs 200 for short distances. While meters are mandatory in cities like Bengaluru, Mysuru, and Mangaluru, Belagavi, recognized as the state’s second capital, has not enforced this rule.

Over 12,000 auto rickshaws operate in Belagavi, with the Regional Transport Office (RTO) ensuring that vehicles are fitted with meters when issued licenses. However, auto drivers have not adhered to meter-based fare systems, leaving passengers at the mercy of arbitrary fare charges. Despite assurances from the new DC, Mohammad Roshan, to implement meters by October 1, no action has been taken so far.

Previous attempts by the district administration to introduce auto meters have also failed, despite efforts from officials like city police commissioner BS Lokesh Kumar, who had initiated measures against overcharging. However, there is currently no system in place to address passengers’ complaints.

Mansoor Honagekar, president of the Auto Rickshaw Drivers Association, stated that while they support the meter system, they are calling for a revision of the fare from Rs 20 to Rs 40 per kilometre. He also requested provisions for local mechanics to handle meter repairs.

DC Roshan confirmed that a meeting would be held with the regional transport department and the Auto Drivers Association after the winter session to discuss making meters mandatory.
