To avoid backlash from historians over the demolition of heritage government buildings, the Belagavi district administration has decided to relocate the proposed Deputy Commissioner’s (DC) Office complex. Instead of the current site, three alternative locations—Hindalaga, Kanabaragi, and Halaga—near the Suvarna Vidhana Soudha (SVS) have been shortlisted.
District Minister Satish Jarkiholi and Women & Child Welfare Minister Laxmi Hebbalkar recently surveyed Hindalaga, a prime contender. The state government has allocated ₹50 crore for the project’s first phase. The initial plan involved constructing the complex on a 145m × 71m plot at its existing location, which required demolishing British-era structures, including the present DC office. The proposed design featured two underground levels and four office floors, with an expected completion by late 2025.
However, authorities reconsidered the location, emphasizing the need to conserve historical landmarks. Minister Hebbalkar stated, “Relocating the project will protect heritage buildings while also addressing space constraints and traffic congestion in the city. Hindalaga, which has nearly merged with urban Belagavi, is a viable option within my constituency. Other sites are also under review.”
The long-pending project, delayed for over a decade, gained traction after Satish Jarkiholi took charge of the Public Works Department. Once completed, the office complex will bring 31 district-level departments under one roof, enhancing administrative efficiency.
