Missing Documents and Alleged Corruption

Corporators have voiced serious concerns about the rise in document thefts from various BCC offices over the past 4-5 years. These missing documents pertain to properties owned by the BCC, leading to suspicions of corruption and forgery. Over 95 BCC properties leased or rented to government and social service organizations are currently unaccounted for. Lease agreements for more than 70 of these properties, collectively worth crores, have expired, yet the BCC has not reclaimed possession, and many rents remain unpaid.

Financial Losses and Accusations

Corporators allege that the laxity of BCC officials has resulted in the corporation losing significant annual revenue. Outstanding dues from leased assets are estimated to be a staggering INR 26 crore. There are accusations that some officials have leased properties for personal gain, with some properties converted into commercial shops generating rents of INR 2-3 lakh per month.

Call for Investigation and Official Response

MLA Abhay Patil has called for a high-level investigation into the matter, highlighting the suspicious timing of document thefts and the lack of clear information regarding leased properties, raising concerns about potential large-scale corruption. In response, Reshma Talikote, Commissioner of BCC Revenue Department, acknowledged the lack of information on leased properties and their locations, stating that a survey is underway to locate all BCC assets. Ashok Dudagunti, Commissioner of BCC, has assured stricter measures to protect corporation properties.

Implications for Property Management

This scandal underscores the need for local authorities to maintain proper records and ensure transparency in property management. Homebuyers and real estate investors in Belagavi should be aware of this situation, as it raises concerns about the overall efficiency and accountability of the BCC.
