Belagavi: The Belagavi City Corporation (BCC) is preparing for a landmark celebration to commemorate its 175th year of establishment in 2026. At a recent council meeting, civic leaders agreed to organize large-scale festivities and decided to approach both the Karnataka government and the Centre for financial assistance.

Mayor Mangesh Pawar directed officials to draft proposals seeking ₹250 crore each from the state and union governments to support the anniversary events. Emphasizing the occasion’s historical significance, he stressed the need for robust planning and adequate funding.

MLA Abhay Patil (Belagavi South) pledged his complete support for the celebrations. “I’ll ensure maximum cooperation to make this historic milestone truly memorable,” he affirmed.

Founded on December 1, 1851, as the Belgaum Municipal Committee, BCC predates even the formation of the Bombay Municipal Corporation (1872). It holds the rare distinction of being the first urban local body in the erstwhile Bombay Karnataka region.

At its inception, the BCC managed a population of 23,115 and generated an annual income of ₹35,460—figures that have grown significantly over the decades. The upcoming celebrations aim to reflect both the city’s rich civic legacy and its development journey.
