A yearlong commemoration of the centenary of Mahatma Gandhi’s presidency at the historic 1924 Belgaum (now Belagavi) Congress session is set to begin on December 26. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah chaired a committee meeting at ‘Krishna’ in Bengaluru to finalize the extensive plans for this landmark event.

Key Initiatives

Under the theme ‘Gandhi Bharata,’ the Congress government announced various initiatives to honor Gandhi’s legacy:

  1. Kannada Adaptation of “Gandhi”: The Academy Award-winning biopic directed by Richard Attenborough will be translated into Kannada to make it accessible to a wider audience.
  2. Educational Outreach: Schools and colleges will receive copies of Gandhi’s “Seven Deadly Sins” and the Preamble of the Constitution, fostering awareness of his ideals.

Major Events

  • A Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting will be held in Belagavi on December 26, followed by a public rally on December 27.
  • Roads spanning 32 kilometers and 30 junctions in Belagavi will be illuminated, reminiscent of Mysuru Dasara’s grandeur.

Memorial Initiatives

A grand memorial named Veera Soudha will be established at the session site, featuring a library and a Gandhi statue. Enhancements include a bust at Gangadhar Rao Deshpande’s memorial in Kanabaragi and the opening of a museum.

This centenary celebration promises to honor Mahatma Gandhi’s contributions while rekindling the spirit of the historic 1924 Congress session.
