Belagavi Reels Under Rain Fury: Roads Washed Out, Bridges Submerged
Belagavi and its surrounding areas have been lashed by relentless rainfall for the past four days, throwing normal life out of gear. Pre-monsoon showers, heavier than expected, have flooded low-lying regions, causing widespread disruption.
In Gokak, a young girl tragically lost her life after her house collapsed due to the continuous downpour. The Belagavi-Goa route via Chorla came to a halt after the Kasamalagi bridge was submerged, and the alternative route was swept away by strong water currents near the under-construction bridge.
Rising water levels in the Krishna River and its tributaries submerged multiple low-level bridges, cutting off connectivity and impacting traffic severely. In the Belagavi Fort Road area, overflow from poorly designed gutters led to waterlogging, frustrating citizens who slammed civic authorities for repeated inaction.
A tree crash on Hindalga Road further contributed to traffic woes. Meanwhile, heavy rainfall continued in Savadatti, Bailhongal, Kittur, Raibag, Kagawad, Athani, Nippani, Chikodi, Khanapur, Ramdurg, Hukkeri, Gokak, and Mudalagi.
In Nippani taluk, a road and retaining wall collapsed on the route to Shendur village, halting traffic. Local officials linked the damage to a nearby well that had compromised the road’s structure. Villagers fear vehicles may slide into the exposed well if they venture through the area.
Western Ghats rainfall intensified the flow into rivers, submerging bridges across the Vedaganga and cutting off access between several villages. In Khanapur, the Malaprabha River also saw a sharp rise. Officials report 25,000 cusecs entering Krishna River, with 40,000 cusecs being released from Hipparagi reservoir.
