To mark the centenary of the historic 1924 Belagavi Congress Session presided over by Mahatma Gandhi, Karnataka’s Forests, Ecology, and Environment Minister, Eshwar B. Khandre, has unveiled a monumental tree-planting initiative. The state plans to plant 10 lakh sandalwood saplings alongside the 2 crore saplings scheduled for the upcoming Vanamahotsava celebration.

In Belagavi district, 100 secure locations will host 100 sandalwood saplings each, ensuring their protection against theft. These sites will also feature photographs of Gandhi at the 1924 Congress Session, accompanied by brief descriptions of the event, to educate future generations about India’s freedom struggle and its significance.

The initiative seeks to celebrate Karnataka’s rich heritage by highlighting the cultural and economic importance of sandalwood, often referred to as the “gold of Karnataka.” It also reflects the state’s commitment to environmental sustainability while paying homage to Gandhi’s ideals and the historic Congress session.

By blending conservation with history, the project aims to deepen Karnataka’s connection to its past while fostering ecological responsibility for the future.
