Nirupama, a female Asiatic lion housed at the Kittur Rani Channamma Mini Zoo in Belagavi, passed away on Thursday, February 6, due to old age and multi-organ failure. The lion, who was 12 years old at the time of her death, had been one of three Asiatic lions brought to the zoo on February 25, 2021. A detailed postmortem examination revealed significant damage to her respiratory system and liver.

Nirupama had become a major attraction at the zoo, often photographed by visitors who flocked to see her. The zoo experienced a surge in foot traffic after the lions were introduced, with Nirupama at the heart of the excitement.

The postmortem was conducted in compliance with Central Zoo Authority guidelines, and her carcass was disposed of according to protocols. Various officials, including Range Forest Officer Pavan Kuraning, Deputy Conservator of Forests Maria Christu Raja, and a team of veterinary professionals, were present during the procedure.

Nirupama’s passing is a significant loss for the Kittur Rani Channamma Mini Zoo and its visitors.
