Dharwad: A Police constable and three others were arrested by the Sub-urban Police here on Wednesday on charges of cheating a person.
The four persons had allegedly hatched a conspiracy to cheat one Maktumsab, a car driver hired by the Income Tax department by promising to pay him gold in exchange of scrapped notes of Rs. 500 and Rs. 1,000 denomination.
Police said the complainant Maktumsab who was to perform the marriage of his sister and was trying to convert Rs. 2.60 lakh which were in old scrapped currency. He was looking for someone who could help him in arranging for the exchange.
He came in contact with Juber, Naeem, and Tauseef who promised to accept the money in old currency and get him gold for a commission.
It was agreed that Maktumsab would pay Rs 2.60 lakh in old notes, and in return he would get gold worth Rs. 2 lakh.
Meanwhile, the trio contacted Mahadev Morab and hatched a plan wherein the police constable was to appear when the money was being exchanged, and seize the old currency and the trio would flee. It was also agreed that all the four would share the money.
The trio had asked the complainant driver to bring the old notes to a particular place in Hoysalnagar. When he came there with the money and was waiting for the gold to be handed over to him, police constable Morab allegedly appeared on the scene and questioned them.
On seeing the policeman, Maktumsab and others fled the scene leaving the money with Juber.
Meanwhile, Juber and his accomplices who were supposed to hand over the gold, had fled the scene and later shared the booty.
Maktumsab who had lost the money tried to contact Juber and others but they pleaded helplessness. Then Maktumsab filed a complaint at the sub-urban police station. Acting on it, the police arrested all the four accused and produced them before the court.
