Dharwad: Noted educationist and writer Dr. K V Narayana has been selected for the prestigious “Ambikatanayadatta” National Award presented by Dr. D R Bendre National Memorial Trust, as part of the poet’s 122nd birth anniversary.

Speaking to media, Trust President Dr. Shyamsundar Bidarkundi said veteran poet Dr. Channaveer Kanavi would confer the award on January 31 at 5.30 pm, at a function to be held in Bendre Bhavan in Sadhanakeri, Dharwad. Prior to that, the literary saga of Dr. Narayana will be reviewed, he said.

The award carries Rs 1 lakh cash and citation.

Dr. Narayana has over 40 years of service to his credit in the academic field as a researcher and teacher. He has written, composed and translated several books in Kannada and won awards including Rajyotsava and Sahitya Academy among others, Bidarkundi said.

The new year 2017 marks the centenary year for late poet Dr. Bendre as he started writing poems with the pen name “Ambikatanayadatta” in 1917. To celebrate this, the Trust has organised special programmes this year, he said.

Reacting to a query Dr. Bidarkundi said Bendre Bhavan was open for researchers, teachers, students and other readers who wished to access the works of Dr. D R Bendre. However, very less number of people visit the Bhavan to read the literature of Dr. Bendre, he lamented. The language teachers must take lead and guide their students to read works of our eminent writers including Dr. Bendre, he said.
