Drought looms large on Dharwad dist again

Dharwad: Dharwad district will be drought-hit once again following scarcity of rains, according to a forecast. Officials concerned with Agriculture, Revenue and Horticulture departments have completed the survey to ascertain the quantum of crop loss in four taluks and the district administration has sought a compensation of Rs. 105.82 Crore from the state government.

Speaking at the 61st Rajyotsava celebrations at RN Shetty Stadium here on Tuesday, District in-Charge Minister Vinay Kulkarni said the scanty rains in monsoon have heavily impacted the agriculture sector. “The scarcity of normal rainfall is a matter of concern. The target of sowing in 1.83 lakh hectares for Rabi season has been set and the required fertilisers are being supplied”, he disclosed. Tender process worth of Rs. 38 crore has been completed for providing lift irrigation facilities at Tuppari Hall in Navalgund taluk and Bennihalla near Amargol village, he added.

The Karnatak Vidyvardhak Sangha founded in 1890 has been playing a pivotal role in state’s formation and dealing with issues of land, language, culture since six decades, Kulkarni said.

Different contingents involving Police, NCC, Scouts, Home guards and School children displayed parade. Laptops were issued to SSLC students who topped in Kannada medium. School children performed cultural programmes on the occasion.

Deputy Commissioner S B Bommanahalli, Police Commissioner Pandurang Rane, SP Dharmendrakumar Meena, ZP CEO Sushma Godbole, Additional DC Ibrahim Maigur and Assistant Commissioner Mahesh Karjagi were present.
