Dharwad: As many as 191 gold medals, 146 PhD degrees, 79 different scholarships were awarded at the 67th annual convocation of Karnataka University, Dharwad here on Saturday at a glittering function held at Gandhi Bhavan.
Veteran poet V C Airsang was conferred with honorary doctorate on the occasion. Higher Education Minister and Pro-Chancellor Basavaraj Rayareddy presided over.
Delivering the convocation address, Justice Mohan Shantangoudar said Educational institutions must create an inclusive environment to promote the concept of social justice as a step towards a fair and just society wherein there is no discrimination.
He said the present education system needs a drastic overhaul. “Since there is a big gap between the latest knowledge in the subject and that which is made available to the students, it is necessary for universities to tackle this problem by bringing in up-to-date curricula for different subjects and courses.
The students must know the latest on the subject,” he opined.
Giving examples of Albert Einstein, Steve Jobs, Narayan Murthy, Azim Premji, Kiran Mazumdar among other achievers he said great people are not born, they grow that way.
He said performance leads to recognition, recognition leads to respect, respect leads to power and hence there is only one way to make India a powerful nation-through performance.
Minister Basavaraj Rayareddi in his presidential remarks lamented on the fall in standard of education and moral values. “Corruption, nepotism among other evils have entered education field too curtailing it. It must be corrected right now”, he felt.
Vice Chancellor Dr. Pramod B Gai, Registrar M N Joshi and others were present.
