Dharwad: The Centre has been asked to provide financial aid for APL families too for toilet construction inorder to make India free from open-defecation, said Karnataka Rural Drinking Water and Sanitation Committee Chairman S G Nanjayyanmath.

Chairing a meeting on rural drinking water at Dharwad Zilla Panchayat, Nanjayyanamath said in view of the financial constraints, even the APL cardholders too should get help from the government to construct toilets. Talks are being held with Union Drinking Water and Sanitation Minister Ramesh Jigjinagi in this regard, he said.

He urged all the people to join hands with government to implement the Total Sanitation Programme to ensure Karnataka as open-defecation free State by October 2.

He asked ZP members and officials to discuss about constructing toilets and providing clean drinking water in all the government programmes they attend thus helping people to focus on personnel hygiene.

As per the reports of the ZP officials, still 44,000 toilets are to be constructed in Dharwad district and this target should be achieved before October 2, he added.

On drinking water, he said there were technical problems in many places with regard to the multi-village drinking water scheme and many such projects were pending. He hoped that good rains this time would ease the drinking water crisis.
ZP President Chaitra Shirur, ZP CEO Snehal Rayamane and others were present.
