Dharwad: The Dharwad district administration has submitted its report on the facilities available for setting up an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), recently, according to the directions given by the state government.

The higher education department had asked the district administration to prepare a comprehensive report on the infrastructure and land available in Dharwad. Accordingly, deputy commissioner P Rajendra Cholan conducted a meeting of officials and elected representatives last week and formed two teams.

Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)A team, headed by MLAs Vinay Kulkarni and Arvind Bellad and comprising district officials, was formed to identify land available in the district for setting up the IIT. A second team comprised officials to study the technical aspects. Both teams were given a week’s time to submit their reports.

The teams submitted their report to the district administration on Monday, which was forwarded to the state government.

The teams have suggested a few buildings wherein an IIT can begin functioning temporarily. The buildings identified by the teams include the Water and Land Management Institute building near the high court, the organic farming building at the University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad, Swami Vivekananda Research Chair, Philosophy Research Chair and Dr DC Pavate Mathematical Institute in Karnatak University. The teams had also inspected facilities available at the newly-constructed Police Training Academy on Kalghatagi Road.

The MLAs’ team has recommended that a parcel of land near Mummigatti near the high court as an ideal location to set up the IIT. Additional deputy commissioner BC Satish said good infrastructure is also available in Dharwad city for it. The teams also suggested that a total of 750 students could be accommodated in the buildings recommended, which are located in education-friendly environs.

For further detailed report, a three-member team from Delhi will visit Raichur and Dharwad districts in July and inspect the land available for the project.
