Belagavi: ICICI bank has landed in soup after it refused to clear a cheque signed in Kannada. A notice has been served to the Bank in this regard and the hearing is posted on February 28.
Diwakar Garag had issued a cheque for Rs 17,220 favouring LIC of India towards premium amount. LIC deposited the cheque in Corporation bank for clearance, which ultimately reached ICICI where the depositor maintained his account. ICICI returned the cheque as it had signature of the account holder in Kannada.
Surprised by ICICI bank’s move, account holder Diwakar Garag filed a complaint in the local consumer court. Court sought clarifications from LIC, Corporation bank and ICICI bank asking reasons for not clearing the cheque. In response, all cited the signature in Kannada as the prime reason for non-clearance.
The court in the meantime deferred the case till February 28 after serving notices to LIC, Corporation bank and ICICI bank.
