A police constable in Belagavi, Karnataka, attempted to stage a suicide by allegedly consuming poison on Wednesday. Mudkappa Udagatti, assigned to bandobast duty, returned to work after a two-day leave. Upon being given the same duty, he reportedly protested, leading to a dramatic scene where he collapsed at the station premises, claiming he had ingested poison.
Udagatti was quickly rushed to a nearby private hospital where medical tests revealed no trace of poison in his system. He was discharged later that evening. According to Police Commissioner Iada Martin Marbaniang, Udagatti had engaged in a heated argument with the station house officer regarding his deployment, which likely led to the incident.
Authorities are now investigating the motives behind Udagatti’s actions, which have raised questions about underlying issues at the station.
This incident comes shortly after a Bengaluru policeman was found dead on railway tracks, adding to the string of tragic events in the region.
