A deeply distressing case of child sexual assault was reported from Muragoda police limits in Belagavi district, where a 13-year-old girl was allegedly kidnapped and assaulted in a sugarcane field on Tuesday. Police have arrested two accused—Manikantha Dinnimani and Iranna Sankammanavar—in connection with the incident.

Survivor was returning home from a flour mill

According to the police report, the seventh-grade student was walking home from a flour mill when she was allegedly pulled into a nearby sugarcane field, around 300 metres from her residence. Investigators say one accused perpetrated the assault while the second allegedly stood watch.

The incident reportedly came to light later than usual, as the family is believed to have received threats, causing a delay in filing the complaint.

Prompt arrests after complaint lodged

A formal complaint was filed on Monday, December 1, following which Murgod Police registered a POCSO case and swiftly apprehended both accused. A woman police officer has been assigned to lead the investigation, in line with child protection protocols.

Belagavi Superintendent of Police Bhimashankar Guled confirmed the arrests and stated that both accused would be produced before court shortly.
“The victim mentioned in her complaint that one of the two committed the assault while the other assisted by standing watch,” he said.

Police to examine reasons for delayed reporting

SP Guled also addressed concerns regarding the late filing of the complaint, stressing that it would be thoroughly examined.
“In our experience, victims may be in shock and frightened. They may hesitate to speak due to fear or societal pressure. We will investigate the circumstances,” he said.

He further emphasised that the delay does not change the gravity of the crime:
“The offence has taken place, preliminary investigations confirm it, and the accused have been arrested. Protecting the survivor is our priority. There has been no attempt to compromise the case. Especially in POCSO cases, police are extremely careful.”

The police have assured full security for the survivor and her family if required.

Community response and ongoing support

Local authorities are coordinating medical care, counselling and legal support to ensure the survivor receives comprehensive assistance. Child welfare officials are expected to remain involved throughout the investigation and trial process.

The case has triggered widespread concern in the region, with community members demanding stronger safeguards for children walking alone in rural belts and enhanced vigilance near agricultural fields.
