Belagavi: Tragedy struck on Saturday when two commandos, Vijaykumar Dinwal (28) from Rajasthan and Diwakar Roy (26) from West Bengal, drowned during a river-crossing exercise at Tilari along the Karnataka-Maharashtra border. The boat they were on capsized, leading to their deaths.

Dinwal and Roy were part of a 35-day commando training program with the Junior Leaders Wing in Belagavi. They were practicing river-crossing techniques when their boat overturned, reportedly due to being overloaded on one side. Despite being trained swimmers, the soldiers struggled due to falling equipment, including ropes, from the boat.

Four other soldiers managed to swim to safety. The bodies of Dinwal and Roy were recovered by senior officials and rushed to Belagavi Military Hospital, where they were declared dead on arrival.

The incident is under investigation, and a case has been registered at Chandgad Police Station in Maharashtra. Approximately 180 soldiers were undergoing this rigorous training at the time.
