Vijayapura: The Hijab row has now reached the District where at least two Pre-University Colleges have been facing heat after students reportedly affiliated to ABVP entered the college by wearing saffron shawl.
According to the reports, the students who are said to be members of ABVP, tried to enter Nagathan PU College in Nidagundi Town and Shanteshwar PU College in Indi Town by wearing saffron shawls. While the management of the Shanteshwar College decided to declare a holiday for the day to avoid any tension, in Nagathan College, ABVP has submitted a memorandum urging the Principal to ban Hijab in the college. They also threatened to attend classes wearing saffron shawl if their demand is not met.
Meanwhile, the Principal has reportedly told the students to wait for the High Court decision as the matter related to Hijab is expected to come up for hearing on Tuesday February 8.
While Hijab row has reached two colleges, no surprise if similar incidents took place in other colleges of the District as the matter is only escalating.
The controversial issue that started from a Government PU College in Udupi, has now spread like a wildfire across the State. The matter has taken a political and communal turn where leaders of ruling and opposition parties have become involved in a war of words. While the Congress is blaming the BJP of instigating the students to create Hijab as a communal issue, the BJP is accusing the Congress of playing appeasement politics.
Amid this, Deputy Commissioner P. Sunil Kumar has said that the District Administration will ensure the implementation of government guidelines over uniform. He has also said that directions will be issued to the police to ensure that law and order is maintained in the District.
