Vijayapura: The festival of colours, Holi was celebrated with immense enthusiasm and great religious spirit across the District on Friday March 18. Though the festival is celebrated for around seven days, the first day carries more importance as the people celebrate the festive day with huge fun.

During the day, people of all age groups and gender were seen enjoying the festival by smearing Gulal and other water colours over each other. The children in particular were enjoying the most as they were completely drenched in different colours. The faces of many of them were hugely coloured and they could not be identified.

A day before the festival, a religious ritual was held which is called ‘burning of Kaama’. Here piles of firewood are gathered and the fire is lit up. While the celebration is held till late night, the fire remained burning even till noon of the next morning.

The children were seen preparing for the festival from the early morning itself as they were adding colour in buckets of water to throw over each other. While some of them used mugs to pour colour over each other, the others had purchased sprayers for the purpose.
At some places, mainly Adaki Galli and Kamal Khan Bazaar area which is epicenter of Holi festival, dozens of children and young men had gathered to celebrate.

Cheering and shouting, they were splashing colour on each other. They also had dry colour which they were smearing on each other.

Meanwhile, the festival was celebrated peacefully with no reports of any untoward incidents. The police had warned the trouble mongers of tough action if they create disturbance during the festival. The Police had also conducted peace committee meetings in all taluks where people of all faiths were suggested to celebrate the festival peacefully.

Since it was Friday, the Muslims offer special prayers, and hence the police were deployed outside the main mosques and also police were conducting rounds of the City.
