Vijayapura: The Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) premises of Hittinahalli Village located at the outskirts of the City is gearing to hold a three-day mega Krishi Mela from January 1.
Since 2023 has been declared as the ‘Year of Millet’ in order to popularise millet production and consumption, the Krishi Mela is focusing more on millets.
“We have already decided to install around 40 stalls of the 180 stalls dedicated to millets during the Mela,” said R. B. Belli, the Campaign Committee President of Mela.
He said that in this regard, the slogan of this year’s mela is ‘Use millets, enhance health’.
“Millets have been considered as the food, which is rich in protein. Another best part is the production does not require too much water and also they are drought resistant that makes the crop best suitable for dry land cultivation. Considering all these aspects, the Mela will focus more on Millets,” Dr. Belli said.
He said that owing to consumption of unhealthy food and stressful life, the health of people is widely getting affected. Malnourishment is increasing among children. The millet, which was considered as poor man’s rich food because of its nutritional value, is fast running out of the diet.
“Today, such nutritious food is needed not only by the poor but also by rich people for better health,” he said.
He said that the stall will exhibit different types of millets and their byproducts being prepared by several companies.
On Friday December 30, the Agriculture Department is also holding a ‘Millet Walk’ in the City to spread awareness on millet production and consumption.
Besides this, awareness programmes and interaction with farmers and experts on millet cultivation will also be held. The farmers will also be educated about value addition and marketing of the millets for making more profits.
Stating that modern farming techniques are the need of the hour, he said that the farmers would be told about new methods being introduced by the scientists and the experts that helps the farmers to earn profit with less cost of cultivation.
The exhibition and sale of various farming products would be held for the farmers. The release has appealed to the farmers to attend in large numbers to collect more information and make use of it for higher earnings in agriculture.
