Vijayapura: DC visits villages on banks of Krishna River

Vijayapura: Considering the possible chances of floods in the villages located on the banks of Krishna River, Deputy Commissioner, Vijaymahantesh Danammanavar visited the villages along with the other officials to check the situation.

He visited various villages of Nidagundi Taluk where he met the residents and inquired about the situation. He said that owing to heavy rains lashing in the District and in Maharashtra, the Rivers are flowing in their full capacity. He said that since the possibility of floods cannot be ruled out at this stage, he advised the villagers to remain alert and asked them not to go near the river.

He visited Yellamman Budihal Village which is located on the banks of Krishna. He directed the officials to place a warning board asking the people not to go near the River.

He later visited Masuti Village where he checked the food and ration at the Anganwadi Centre.

During the visit to the Villages, he inquired about the compensation given to the farmers for losing crop last year due to natural calamities.

Amid this, the District Administration has made elaborate arrangements to deal with any eventuality arising of the heavy rains that are lashing in the District since few days.

Directions have been issued to various officials in different departments to stay on alert.

Meanwhile, the Almatti Dam, which is receiving a huge quantity of water everyday, has increased the outflow. The officials have discharged 75000 cusecs of water through the crest gates. Alert has already been sounded in Kolhar, Nidagundi, Muddebihal Taluks where villages are located on the banks of Krishna. Alert has also been sounded in the villages located on the banks of Bhima and Don Rivers. Following the release of 2 lakh cusecs of water from Ujini Dam of Maharashtra into Bhima River, a total of 42 villages of Chadchan, Indi and Sindagi Taluks have turned into islands. The officials have said that if 5 lakh cusecs of water is discharged from Almatti Dam, then some nine villages of Muddebihal Taluk, one village of Nidagundi and one fourth Village of Almatti will be surrounded by water.

In order to deal with possible flood situations, the District Administration has identified places in the District to open rehabilitation centres for flood affected people. Some 21 places in Indi Taluk, seven in Chadchan, 14 in Sindagi, seven in Muddebihal, 4 in Babaleshwar and one in Nidagundi have been identified.

DC directed the officials to set up a disaster management team in 58 Gram Panchayats of Bhima, Don and Krishna River basins. A total of 62 houses have been damaged and 84 cattle heads perished in rains between April 1 and July 8 in the District.

Relief amount has been given to the affected persons as per Government norms, the officials said. Danammanavar directed the health officials to store adequate quantities of drugs in all the Government Hospitals of the District.

He said that adequate fodder should also be kept to provide to cattle in case of emergencies.
