Vijayapura: KPCC Women Wing President Pushpa Amarnath has said that since BJP has got a majority in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, it should pass the bill to give 33% reservation to women in Assembly and Lok Sabha polls in the country.

Addressing mediapersons at the District Congress Committee Office on Monday December 12, she said that the BJP which claims to be a pro-women party must show it in action by passing the pending bill for giving reservations to women.

“During the UPA Government, the Congress did not have a full majority as it was a Coalition Government. But since BJP is enjoying an absolute majority, it is easy for the party Government to pass the bill to show that it has a real concern for women and that the party wishes to empower women by ensuring reservation in Assembly and Lok Sabha elections”, she said.

Amarnath said that till the Government passes the law, the political parties at least should take responsibility for giving tickets to women candidates in the elections. She said that all the parties should give priority to women in the distribution of tickets.

Demanding the Congress to grant tickets to at least 25 women candidates in the coming Assembly elections, she said that in the last Assembly polls, the party had offered tickets to around 15 women candidates, of who five won.

She said that for the next Assembly elections also, around 88 women from the State have sought tickets, which she claimed was an encouraging aspect.

“It is not a small matter that 88 women have expressed the desire to contest in the Assembly polls from different constituencies. From Vijayapura District also, around five women have sought tickets. We hope that the party will identify suitable candidates and offer tickets to women aspirants,” she said.

With regard to strengthening the women wing of the party and empowering women to take lead in the political activities, KPCC has launched two programmes ‘Na Nayaki (I am leader) and Nari Shakti ( Women power) in the State.

The first one will encourage the women to understand their power and participate in various public activities and raise the issues such as price rise, unemployment etc. The second programme is meant for the women party workers to encourage them to participate in political activities and become leaders.

District Women Wing President Vidyarani Tungal, and State General Secretary Jayashri were present.
