Vijayapura: With an objective of having better traffic management of the city and to check traffic rules violations, the District Police has decided to install at least 1,000 CCTV cameras at the prominent areas of the city in the phased manner.

In this regard, the District Police has not only submitted a detailed report to the government but also has shared information with the City Corporation for identifying the prominent places where the CCTV cameras would be installed.

“ We have already submitted the details to the government about the estimated project cost of Rs 5 crores. We are hoping to get approval from the government for installation of the camera which will help us better manage the traffic and catch the violators”, said Superintendent of Police, Anupam Agrawal.

Mentioning the salient features of the monitoring system, he said that it will have a Red Light Violation Detection (RLVD) system which will keep track of the people who violate the traffic law by jumping the red light. “ More importantly, it will have a system to capture the photos of the number plate of the vehicle.

This facility is very helpful to the police in nabbing the culprits as the camera notes down the number of the vehicle. To a great extent, the number identification system helps in capturing the culprits based on the number of the vehicle. By going through the record of RTO, the owner of the vehicle could be easily identified”, he said.

Agrawal said that it will also have a centralized monitoring system to look at details of all CCTVs. Besides this, a centralized announcement system will also be part of this which would be used to make any specific announcement to inform the people.
Asked whether the CCTV cameras have Face Recognition system, he said that since the technology is at the developing stage, no decision has been taken on the cameras having this facility.

“Moreover, for effective implementation of the system, we need to have huge data of pictures of all citizens with different angles to help the camera to record and select possible accused among the countless people. Therefore, as of now, we are not much focusing on this aspect”, he said.

Admitting that the city presently has only around a dozen CCTV cameras which are too meagre, he said that the city needs at least 500 CCTV cameras. “ Considering the future requirements, we have made a project plan of 1000 CCTV cameras for the city. We hope that soon the funds will be released and we will have several cameras to monitor the movement of commuters”, he said.
