Vijayapura: ‘Safai Karmacharis to be sent to Singapore for study’

Vijayapura: M. Shivanna Kote, Karnataka State Safai Karmachari Commission President has said that the commission has decided to send some ten Safai Karmacharis from each distrzict to Singapore to study how cleanliness is maintained and managed.

Speaking to mediapersons after holding a review meeting on Friday February 24, he said that the discussion has been completed with the Government and the officials have been directed to identify the suitable persons who are having required documents to travel abroad. Informing that around 7,000 manual scavengers have been identified in the State with rehabilitation already being provided to around 3,000 workers.

Kote said that the Government has announced plans to regularise the services of around 12,000 workers. Already the process of regularising their services of 11,133 workers has been started. While plans are being made to provide houses to the workers, the Government is contemplating to construct guest houses also for them like the Government of Assam has done, he said.

For ensuring good health of the workers, the officials have been directed to hold monthly medical check-up camps of the safai karamcharis, he said.

“I have been touring the State and meeting Safai Karmachari. On the one hand, we are trying to address their grievances, on the other we have been educating them about the welfare schemes being launched for them by the Government,” he said.

Stating that the commission is giving impetus on education and health of the Safai Karmacharis and their children, he said that the Commission has been honouring the children of Safai Karmacharis who scored highest marks in SSLC or any other higher courses. This is primarily to encourage the children to continue their education for building better careers.

Deputy Commissioner Vijaymahantesh Danammanavar, Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officee, Rahul Shinde, Commission Secretary Chandrakala and other officials were present.
