Vijayapura: Karnataka State Akkamahadevi Women’s University’s library has now gone digital in order to help the students to access the books and other study materials through their smartphone or computer itself.

At the time of the Covid pandemic when the online classes were taking place to avoid the gathering of students to prevent the spreading of Covid, the new platform has been given to the students where they can refer to required books from anywhere in the world in their smartphone.

“ As we all know the colleges are shut and students cannot come to University to read books in the library. Besides this, since the digital library concept has gained significance over the years, the University decided to adopt the new platform to help the students”, said Gavisiddappa Anandalli, Librarian of the University.

He said that the University has joined hands with a private agency called Knimbus to develop the app where thousands of books could be accessed for reading.

He said that already the app has over 50,000 books and other periodicals which can be accessed by the students. The University has some 30 different departments, and the digital library has books related to all these departments.

“ The advantage of the App is that every year, new books get added and new volumes are updated which helps the students to keep themselves updated with the knowledge”, he said.

Admitting that as compared to 1.15 lakh books that are available in University’s library, the number of books in digital format are still less, he however said that every year more books keep getting added.

The University has already purchased around 10,000 books in digital format from different publishers while the remaining books are available for free from various other sources such as UGC which has been giving digitised books.

The App has given links to various sources of books that can be accessed by the students.

Ananadalli said that using a special access code, all the students of the University and its affiliated colleges can register themselves to access the books and other study materials.

The App was officially launched at the University by Registrar, R. Sunandamma on Wednesday. She appealed to the students to make use of the new digital library for better preparation for exams and to increase their knowledge.
