Bengaluru: No More Grace Marks for SSLC Exams, Announces Education Minister
In a significant policy shift, Karnataka’s Minister for School Education and Literacy, Madhu Bangarappa, announced on Wednesday that grace marks will no longer be awarded for SSLC (Class 10) examinations starting this year. This decision is part of broader reforms aimed at curbing malpractice during exams, including the implementation of live streaming and webcasting.
At a news conference, Bangarappa stated, “There is no fear among students regarding the reforms we have made, and hence there is no need for grace marks. Copying has ceased because of the measures introduced last year, and students are aware of the system in place.”
Previously, the Karnataka School Examination and Assessment Board had awarded 20% grace marks during the March/April 2024 SSLC exam results to address a significant drop in performance, which was attributed to the new measures against malpractice. Approximately 1.70 lakh students who initially failed were promoted due to these grace marks.
The decision to eliminate grace marks follows a review meeting led by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, who questioned the rationale behind awarding them. The reforms aim to enhance the integrity of the examination process while ensuring students are adequately prepared for their assessments.
