Bengaluru: The Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Department has decided to rejuvenate as many as 14,000 water sources, especially the temple puskaranis (lakes). Besides this, the department is also planning to construct 12,000 check dams across the state in two phases to improve the groundwater table.

According to the sources in the department, the state government has decided to use the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee scheme to implement this scheme.

Kanakavali, commissioner, Department Rural Development and Panchayat Raj (MGNREGA) informed that the geo tag technology will be used to ensure the success of the scheme. “Each puskarani, which will be taken up for rejuvenation will be geo tagged. The details of puskarani before the rejuvenation and after the rejuvenation will be recorded through the geo tagging,” she informed.

According to the authorities, the puskaranis, which are selected under the scheme are identified through satellite images. “The details of puskaranis are collected through the satellite. Based on the images, the puskarani development plan is prepared,” informed authorities.

As far as check dams are concerned, in the first phase, 8,000 check dams will be constructed. In the second phase, 4,000 check dams will be constructed,” explained authorities.
