Bengaluru: Thirty passengers had a narrow escape in the early hours of Friday after a private sleeper bus veered off the Bengaluru–Tumakuru highway near Nelamangala, fell into a roadside ditch and burst into flames after coming into contact with a live electric wire. No casualties were reported, though the vehicle was completely gutted in the fire.

The incident took place around 1.30 am near Budihal Gate, within the Nelamangala traffic police limits. Prompt evacuation by passengers and quick response by police and fire personnel helped prevent what could have turned into a major tragedy.

Bus reportedly climbed divider before fire broke out

According to preliminary information from the police, the sleeper coach belonging to a private operator, Prajwal Travels, was travelling along the highway when the accident occurred. Investigators suspect that the driver may have briefly fallen asleep at the wheel, leading to loss of control over the vehicle.

The bus reportedly swerved off its lane, climbed onto the divider and then slipped into a ditch by the roadside. During this sequence, it is believed to have come into contact with a live electric line or exposed wire, which produced sparks and immediately ignited parts of the vehicle.

The fire spread rapidly due to the bus’s interior materials and luggage stored inside, creating a high-risk situation for those onboard.

Passengers evacuate before flames spread

Despite the suddenness of the crash and the fire outbreak, all 30 passengers managed to exit the bus in time. Police said several passengers noticed smoke and sparks soon after the impact and quickly alerted others, leading to a swift evacuation.

Some passengers reportedly broke open emergency exits while others rushed through the main door as the driver and support staff raised the alarm. Their quick reaction ensured that no one was trapped inside when the fire intensified.

A few passengers were said to have suffered minor shock and bruises while getting out in a hurry, but none required hospitalisation, according to initial reports from responding officials.

Fire services and police rush to the spot

On receiving information, Nelamangala traffic police and personnel from the Fire and Emergency Services Department rushed to the location. Firefighters worked to bring the blaze under control, but by the time the flames were fully extinguished, the bus had been almost entirely destroyed.

Traffic movement on that stretch of the highway was briefly affected as emergency teams secured the area and ensured there was no further electrical hazard from damaged lines nearby. Power supply in the immediate vicinity was also checked as a precautionary measure.

Police personnel assisted stranded passengers and helped arrange alternative transport so they could continue their onward journey.

Case registered, probe underway

A case has been registered at the Nelamangala Traffic Police Station, and an investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the accident. Officials said they will examine factors including driver fatigue, vehicle condition, speed, and adherence to night-driving safety norms.

Statements from the driver, passengers and the bus operator are expected to be recorded. Authorities are also likely to verify whether mandated rest periods and driver rotation rules were followed for the overnight journey.

Rising concern over night bus safety

The incident has once again raised concerns about safety standards in private sleeper bus operations, especially during late-night and early-morning hours when driver fatigue becomes a significant risk factor. Highway police have repeatedly advised transport operators to ensure adequate rest for drivers and to use dual-driver systems on long routes.

Experts note that many major bus accidents on intercity highways occur between midnight and dawn, when visibility is lower and driver alertness drops. Regular vehicle fitness checks and strict enforcement of duty-hour limits are considered critical to reducing such risks.

Conclusion

The Nelamangala mishap could have resulted in heavy loss of life but for the alertness and quick action of the passengers and crew. While no lives were lost, the total destruction of the bus highlights how quickly highway accidents can escalate when combined with electrical hazards and fire. Authorities are expected to tighten checks as the investigation progresses.
